Illustration to accompany the Wyandot folktale "Sky Woman and the Turtle".
The story tells of the divine woman, full of power, and daughter of Big-Chief-Above. One day the sky's cannopy trembled, and she fell to the earth. There, she spread the joy and miracles of nature until she was buried under the ground.
From her body grew the plants that the new earth needed for the people who were to be created. The pumpkin vine grew from her head, maize from her breasts, and beans from her limbs.
